Register and maintain your supplier profile through National Treasury's official CSD portal. Check that your company, banking, tax and contact information is accurate and that verification issues are resolved. A CSD supplier number is not a contract award or a substitute for tender-specific eligibility.

This is independent guidance from TenderSearch SA, not advice from a government authority. Verify current requirements with the issuer and these official references: National Treasury Central Supplier Database.

Before you can win a single rand of South African government business, you need to be on the Central Supplier Database (CSD). It's not optional, it's not negotiable and unlike most government processes it's actually free and reasonably fast if you know what you're doing. This guide walks you through CSD registration step by step, what every section is asking for and the mistakes that cause your bids to be flagged or rejected even after you're registered.

What is the Central Supplier Database (CSD)?

The Central Supplier Database is National Treasury's single, consolidated register of all suppliers who do business with any organ of state in South Africa. It was launched in 2016 to replace the hundreds of separate departmental supplier databases that used to exist. Today, by law, every national department, every provincial department, every municipality and every state-owned enterprise must verify that a bidder is registered on the CSD before awarding any contract above R30 000 (and most below that threshold too).

Your CSD profile carries a unique MAAA number (e.g. MAAA0123456). That number is your identity in the government procurement universe. It is asked for on every Standard Bidding Document (SBD) form, on every quote request and on every purchase order.

Who needs to register on the CSD?

  • Companies (Pty) Ltd registered with CIPC
  • Close Corporations (CCs) those still active
  • Sole proprietors and partnerships
  • Trusts
  • Co-operatives
  • Non-profit organisations (NPOs/NPCs)
  • Foreign suppliers tendering for SA work

Even if you only ever plan to sell a small service once a year to a single municipality, you still need to be CSD registered. Without it, no PO can legally be issued to you.

What you need before you start CSD registration

Have these ready before you sit down. Trying to find them mid-flow is the #1 reason people abandon their CSD application:

  1. Identity number of the lead user (a director, owner or trustee)
  2. Company registration number (CIPC enterprise number)
  3. VAT number if you are VAT-registered (over R1m turnover)
  4. Active bank account in the registered company name savings accounts and personal accounts will not pass verification
  5. Tax reference number (the 10-digit SARS reference on your tax certificates)
  6. Physical and postal address with proof (utility bill, lease)
  7. B-BBEE level affidavit (EME/QSE) or verified certificate
  8. Director details IDs and shareholding percentages for every director or member
  9. Commodity codes (UNSPSC) for the goods/services you will offer pre-pick these from the CSD list

Step-by-step: how to register on the CSD

Step 1: Create a Self-Service Portal account

Go to secure.csd.gov.za and click "Register". You'll register a personal account (not a company account) using your ID number, name, email and cellphone. National Treasury sends an OTP to verify the cell number make sure you can receive SMSes during registration.

Step 2: Capture supplier identification

Choose the supplier type (Company, CC, Trust, Sole Proprietor etc.). For companies, the system will pull your registered name, status and director list directly from CIPC by company number. If your CIPC details are out of date, fix them on eservices.cipc.co.za first or your CSD record will be wrong from day one.

Step 3: Capture banking details

CSD verifies your bank account electronically through the SA banking system (BankServ). The verification takes 24–72 hours and checks:

  • The account number is valid for the bank chosen
  • The account is active (not dormant or closed)
  • The account name exactly matches your registered company name

Mismatches here are the most common reason CSD records get stuck on "Pending Verification". If your bank account is in your trading name and your company is registered under a slightly different name, the verification will fail.

Step 4: Capture tax compliance details

Enter your SARS tax reference number. CSD now does a real-time electronic check against SARS to confirm your tax status this is the modern replacement for uploading a TCS PIN. If SARS shows you as non-compliant, your CSD profile will reflect that and you cannot bid until it's resolved.

Step 5: Capture B-BBEE details

Upload your B-BBEE certificate or sworn affidavit and enter your contribution level (1 to 8) and black ownership percentage. EMEs and QSEs that are 100% black-owned should ensure they're flagged as Level 1 and 51%+ black-owned as Level 2. This single field determines your preference points on every future bid.

Step 6: Capture commodity codes (UNSPSC)

CSD uses the global UNSPSC classification system. Pick every code that describes what you sell. Be generous — government buyers search the CSD by commodity code to find vendors, and a tender brief will not match you to bid invitations if you're not coded for the relevant category. Most suppliers should add 15–30 codes.

Step 7: Submit and wait for the MAAA

Once all sections are green-ticked, submit. Your MAAA number usually issues within 1–3 business days, sometimes immediately if your bank and CIPC verifications come back fast.

Common CSD registration mistakes

  • Bank account in the wrong name. If your CIPC name is "Acme Holdings (Pty) Ltd" and your FNB account is in "Acme Trading", verification will fail. Open a bank account in the exact registered name.
  • Out-of-date director lists. CIPC and CSD must match. Resign directors at CIPC before adding the change to your CSD profile.
  • Tax non-compliance not noticed. CSD pulls SARS status live. Check your tax compliance on SARS eFiling before starting CSD registration.
  • Too few commodity codes. Suppliers who code only 1–2 categories are invisible to most procurement searches.
  • Forgetting to renew B-BBEE annually. CSD doesn't automatically alert you when your B-BBEE certificate expires. Set your own diary reminder.

How long does CSD registration take?

For a complete, error-free application: 2 to 5 business days. Most of that time is the bank account verification loop with BankServ. Plan for two weeks if you've never registered before you'll likely have one or two cycles of fixing CIPC, opening a correctly-named bank account, or sorting out a SARS compliance issue.

What to do after you have your MAAA number

  1. Save your MAAA somewhere obvious. You'll be asked for it on every bid form for the rest of your business life.
  2. Log into CSD monthly. Government buyers can flag your record as out of date if details haven't been confirmed in a while.
  3. Update CSD whenever something changes. New director, new bank, new B-BBEE level, expanded service offerings all of these should be reflected within 30 days.
  4. Add tender keyword alerts. Now that you're eligible to bid, the next bottleneck is finding tenders early. That's where TenderSearch SA comes in.
